As Northern-Irish born and bred, I am admittedly a little biased - but I think the Merchant Hotel in Belfast is one of the most stunning hotels I have ever seen. It's a converted bank, and it exudes grandeur. The service is impeccable, and it is just the most perfect place to go for afternoon tea (or any other occasion you can think of). My cousin and I went for a drink there one Christmas, and as we sat there near the roaring open fire, we mused that sitting there for an afternoon was the epitome of pure, unadulterated joy. In fact, this hotel is just across the street from the Belfast Print Workshop, which is where I first saw a print entitled "Two for Joy" - the inspiration for the title of this blog.

I went to that very print shop recently and my friend and I actually contemplated treating ourselves to something inside the hotel but thought hmmmm looks like a place where your voice echos and tea costs £12 and old ladies wear dead foxes around their necks with overly-red lipsticked lips and shrewd slitty eyes and bored husbands.
No - you really missed out. It is very cool! And the prices aren't that unreasonable as long as you don't go crazy!
